Hi, Jeff. I've been disappointed in President Obama, too. His bailouts of Wall Street especially irked me and made me wonder just who he feels beholden to. But, at the same time, it's only been a year, and so I'm adopting a wait-and-see attitude and trying to keep an open mind.

Thanks for posting this essay. It's what I've been saying all along, but Mike Elk says it way better than I do. As I've said in my comments here before (and to you in my emails),the reason the white working class feels that the "liberal elite" harbors contempt for them is because so many liberals DO. Every single one of them should read Joe Bageant's book Deer Hunting with Jesus, where he talks about this very thing. Even the political correctness many liberals practice doesn't extend to the white working class. In their eyes, "rednecks" are fair game. Right here in Asheville where I live and where so many people see themselves as "progressive", you see that contempt all the time---in blogs, in comments on blogs, etc. Sometimes it's subtle, sometimes not, but it's there. And you better believe the working class feels it.

I'm with you---I don't think union organizing is the answer. Here in the South, there's a great mistrust of unions. Instead, I think his other suggestion is the key: go where the working class is and really, really talk to them. Even better, really, really LISTEN. With an open mind and not so many pre-conceived notions...

In other words, be LIBERAL. :-)

I think he's doing a great job. He's up against a lot of whackos and the big corporations that brainwashed them and you know what, I do think many of them are racists. Oh, the survey showed race had nothing to do with who they voted for. Bull. Many people have said racist things to me about Obama because they assumed a white blonde chick living in southern Virginia would be racist too. This president is between a rock and a hard place. Every time he turns around, his own people are attacking him. It will be a miracle if he is able to do 10% of what he hopes to. They even got you turning away from him Jeff. And if our people vote for Sarah Palin, that will confirm it--they ARE stupid. Yeah, we should start talking in their language. Tell them God wants them to support Obama. Which, you know what, it's probably true.

Here is a post from Karen De Coster at LewRockwell.com:

If you had told me when I was growing up in the cold war that in 2009 an anarchist CPA (http://karendecoster.com/about) would be using Russian TV interviews to criticize a Democratic president for high unemployment, I would think you were inventing a pretty bizarre science fiction story!

I hadn't heard he had made a decision re the troops. I have to agree, he's been long on promise and short on results, and my disappointment is growing. I'm waiting for a "damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead" posture. Still, the fact that he's in vs McCain/Palin is sufficient for me not to be sorry to have voted for him. As for 2012, I can't say he's lost my vote until I see who's running against him. Do I want more from him? Yeah. Do I want another wacko in office? Hell no!
